Spring Cleaning Makeover: 10 Tips To Make Your Home Sparkle Like New

Banish the winter blues, rejuvenate your senses, and get set for Spring with these timeless tips that go beyond the weekly cleaning routine.

1. Start It Right

Before you start tackling any spring clean, it’s a smart move to declutter first. Studies show when clutter accumulates, our stress levels rise right along with it. So taking the time to clean out those closets, free up that spare room, and get rid of the junk drawer, will not only save you time spring cleaning, but have you feeling ultra-relaxed too.

2. Clean Walls and Ceilings

Always start spring cleaning your home from the ceiling down. This focuses dirt downwards and avoids you having to re-clean. Remove all dust and cobwebs on walls and ceilings with a vacuum. Tackle stubborn grime or greasy patches (especially on kitchen walls) with baking soda or use a degreaser like liquid sugar soap. Tip: Be sure to test an inconspicuous area first, to ensure it won’t mark the surface

3. Wash Windows & Screens

Sparkling windows not only look great, they also allow more natural light to radiate through the home. Create equal parts of vinegar and tap water in a spray bottle and apply for a gleaming clean. Also be sure to give those clogged fly screens a good scrub with soapy water, so your outside view takes on a whole new perspective.

4. Tackle Books & Shelves

Bookshelves and books are a hot spot for dust collection. Remove everything from the shelf and brush both the shelves and books with a feather duster. Wipe the spines of hard-cover books with a clean, soft cloth. Tip: use this opportunity to sort through a bulging bookcase by donating or selling any old or unwanted books.

5. Clean Out Cupboards

The insides of drawers and cupboards are a popular hiding sport for moth larvae. Wipe out all the insides with cedarwood oil to kill any larvae. Then wash exposed clothing at the highest temperature possible or stick them in a plastic bag and freeze them for 24 hours to prevent re-infestation.

6. Freshen Up Flooring

Treating your carpets to a deep clean not only brightens their appearance, but gives your health a boost too. If you’re not up to the task, then hiring a professional to get the job done, is definitely money well spent.

Now’s the perfect time to give those other floor coverings a treat too. Polish vinyl, stone or tiled flooring with wax, damp mop wooden floors with a polyurethane finish, and wipe over those neglected skirting boards to bring them back to new.

7. Rejuvenate Rugs

Give synthetic carpets and rugs a new lease of life with a shampoo machine or hot-water extraction machine Tip: Check they have waterproof backing. However, the safest and most effective deep clean you can give your rugs, is to roll them up and have them taken away for professional clean.

8. Revitalise Bedding

To bring out the best in your bed, flip your mattress every three months (alternating between the head and foot) to maintain its shape and support. Vacuum your mattress and wash, or dry clean all of your quilts, duvets, and pillows. Airing them out in the sunshine for a few hours is also good idea.

9. Organise the Home Office

Nothing collects clutter like an office. Go through any files you have and shred unnecessary papers. Re-organize storage systems and desk drawers. Wipe over your computer and other equipment with a soft cloth. Finally, spring clean the content on your computer - sort folders, delete outdated files and back up important data onto an external drive.

10. Get Ready for Summer

Spring is a great time to pack away the winter woollies and reveal your summer wardrobe. Wash and pack away all your winter clothing, bed linen and blankets and then store in protective covering ready for next season. Sort our last season’s summer clothes and give away or sell anything you no longer need or war. Then wash, press and set up your fresh new wardrobe, so you’re ready in advance to flaunt your summer style.

It's also the perfect opportunity to tidy up outside and brighten your exterior with some of the beautiful flowers that prosper during Spring. Click here to read more about landscaping at home.
